March 7, 2013   Hawk-Eyes in Space.  Department of Physics and Astronomy Public Demonstration Show featuring data from the Juno and Van Allen Probes missions with demonstrations of plasma and radiation.  Several spacecraft and models will also be on display.  LR 1 Van Allen Hall, 7:00 pm.  The following movie clips were taken during the demonstration show:

March 15, 2013   James Wetzel uses the Crater Formation demonstration to help elucidate the relationship between volume, density, velocity of the impactor, and the crater it creates during two separate Astronomy Lab sections at Coe College, in Cedar Rapids, IA. 

 

March 23, 2013   Phillip Kline uses the palm poppers at the State Science Olympiad Competition in the Technical Problem Solving event at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA.

April 20, 2013   Hawk-Eyes in Space.  Cornelia Lang presents at Mann Elementary school using moon globes, Mars globes, and spectrum tubes.  

 

April 23, 2013   Hawk-Eyes on Science hosts the University of Iowa Soccer team while they participate in an inter-squad Amazing Race at 12:40 pm in Rm 309 Van.  Thank you.

 

April 25, 2013   Hawk-Eyes on Science presents at the Noche de Ciencias at Glenview Middle School, 3100 7th St, East Moline, IL. Jairo Muñoz coordinating. Thank you.

 

April 26, 2013  Hawk-Eyes in Space.  Bill Kurth gives a presentation "Exploring the Solar System with Robotic Spacecraft" and talks about Juno, Voyager, and Cassini to the 6th graders and their  teacher at Wilson Focus School, 5141 1st St, Omaha, NE.   

 

April 26, 2013 Hawk-Eyes in Space.  Rich Dvorsky and George Hospodarsky give a talk about space, including Van Allen Probes, Juno, Cassini, Voyager, Cluster, Mars, Express, Polar, Galileo, and Professor  Van Allen to the 1st graders at Truman Elementary, 441 West Post Rd NW, Cedar Rapids Iowa.  They also launched some model rockets.

May 20, 2013  Hawk-Eyes on Science present some demonstrations to a student group and physics teacher Pam Joslyn from Muscatine High School.  Molly Elizalde coordinating.

 

May 22, 2013   Hawk-Eyes in Space.  Scott Bounds and Dale Stille give two presentations using demonstrations on space science at the STEM Institute held at the University of Iowa Medical Education and Research Facility,  9:00 am - 11:00 am.  

 

June 5, 2013  Cafe Scientifique   Professors Maurine Neimann, John Logsden, John Fingert, Jodie Pulmert and moderator Prof. Vincent Rodgers hold a panel discussion "The Scientist and Public Responsibility: Snail Sex, Sciences and Federal Funding".  Iowa City Public library, Room A, 5:00 to 6:00 pm. The discussion addresses recent news stories that focused on federal dollars and scientific funding in the United States.

 

June 9, 2013   Hawk-Eyes on Science presents at the iExploreSTEM Event held at McKinley Middle School in Cedar Rapids, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.  Gina Schatteman coordinating.  Vincent Rodgers, Dale Stille, and Jim Schroeder presenting.

July 24, 2013  Brent Studer presents STEM seminar to the 10th graders from Columbus Community High School participating in The Upward Bound Project summer program where they learned about STEM-related careers, explored the intersection of the Arts and Humanities, and investigated basic scientific principles.  

 

August 22, 2013   Hawk-Eyes in Space.  Dr. Scott Bounds presents "A Return to the Earth's Radiation Belts: the Van Allen Probes", "A History of the Discovery of the Radiation Belts", "A Travel Log on the EMFISIS Instrument to Launch", and "Early Results from the Van Allen Probes" at the  Sertoma Club.

 

August 26, 2013 University of Iowa course, Guest Lecturer on Radiochemistry: Energy, Medicine, Environment, taught by Benjamin Revis, borrowed numerous demonstrations in radioactivity and detection of radioactivity such as: NaI Crystal, Light Pipe, Photomultiplier Tubes, Exposed X-ray Film, Cloud Chamber, etc.

 

August 28, 2013  The Physics and Astronomy department presents at the third annual CLAS Open House for first-year and transfer students during their On Iowa! orientation group.

 

August 31, 2013   Hawk-Eyes in Space.  Dr. Scott Bounds presents "A Return to the Earth's Radiation Belts: the Van Allen Probes", "A History of the Discovery of the Radiation Belts", "A Travel Log on the EMFISIS Instrument to Launch", and "Early Results from the Van Allen Probes" at the Iowa Star Party.

 

September 12, 2013  Professor Donald Gurnett participates in the NASA's news conference to discuss the Voyager Spacecraft mission in relation to an article discussed in the journal "Science".

October 2, 2013  Cafe Scientifique Cafe Scientifique Dr. Jim Torner presents, "Concussions, Contusions, and Protection of One's Brain", how the rising cost of head injuries will change sports and transportation at IC Public Library, Room A, 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm.

 

October 5th, 2013  Hawk-Eyes on Science give a presentation to the Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos at F.W. Kent Park, 2048 Highway 6 NW, Oxford at 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

 

October 8, 2013   Hawk-Eyes in Space present to the senior college class. Professor Craig Kletzing presents about space weather, Van Allen radiation belts, the aurora borealis, and sounding rockets. 1st of 4 sessions.

Demonstrations presented during these presentations include: Magnetometers, Audio Transformer, Rings Demo, Bend a beam with a Magnet, Van Allen Satellite Model, Explorer Body, Copper Plate and Magnet, Pith Ball Deflection, Jumping Disks, Emission Spectra, E/M Apparatus, and Spectroscopes, Magnet and Iron Filings, Magnetic Fields Around a Single Wire, Plasma Tube, Convection Cells, Sunspots, and more.

December 11, 2013 Hawk-Eyes on Science presents experiments to basic calculus and differential equations class.  Experiments included Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Singing  Bowl, Wilberforce Pendulum, Synchronizing Metronomes, Pop and Balloon, and Neural Networks. Shuvra Gupta coordinating.
